Report [中文报告]

W3C China organized a Web Technology Forum in June 2023, which was held as a hybrid event with the main in-person hub in Beijing. The event was chaired by Angel Li (W3C China Deputy Director), Qing An (Chinese Web Interest Group co-Chair) and Zitao Wang (MiniApps Working Group co-Chair).

This forum gathered the Web community in China, discussed the latest Web technologies and identified the possible requirements for Web standards, with a focus on cutting-edge technologies such as Web Security, intelligent applications, multimedia, distributed identity, cloud and Web interaction, and topics related to internationalization and accessibility, and explored how to address the challenges the Web is facing today to further meet the needs of industry and users.

A more intelligent and secure Web

Philippe Le Hegaret (W3C Strategy and Project Management Lead) gave a talk introducing the Web standardization work on Web Neural Network, Machine Learning, Security, Private Advertising, WebRTC, WebAssembly, WebGPU, WebTransport, WebCodecs, WCG, HDR, Incremental font transfer, DID/VC, WCAG and Sustainability. PWA in sidebar: Leveraging innovation trends to improve user experience

Qingjian Song (Microsoft) introduced how to build sidebar apps in Microsoft Edge that can reach more users through personalized recommendations and in-browser tooltips, including how to configure the web app manifest. Their plan is to promote standardization of this feature at W3C. (See the slides and video on YouTube, Bilibili, WeChat)

GPT with front-end engineering to improve intelligent development

Ruikun Ai (Tencent) explained how to combine GPT with front-end engineering to improve intelligent development, including insights into GPT, the importance of prompt, and the future of large language models in developing applications. Ruikun shared the IDE plug-in that uses GPT for intelligent engineering, which breaks the limit that CLI can't obtain in the code context. It can not only accurately modify the code through AST, improve automation and engineering, and optimize and generate codes, but also convert between different programming languages and generate codes from sketches. Webtransport & Webcodecs implement RTC and relevant standards and practices

Deping Li(ByteDance VolcEngineRTC Team)introduced the WebTransport, WebCodecs and WebAssembly technologies from W3C and IETF, compared the differences between WebTransport and other protocols, and explained the WWW-based RTC application's overall architecture, transport specification, server and client SDK architecture, video processing flow, and pros and cons of relevant solutions. Build Web audio and video communication engine based on WebAssembly

Jianhua Tian (Tencent) shared how to build a Web audio & video communication engine leveraging WebAssembly, where he explained the advantages and disadvantages of WebRTC architecture, how to customize codecs, transport modes, data encryption and other mechanisms through WebTransport, WebCodecs and WebAssembly, as well as the overall architecture of audio & video communication engine and SDK, optimization of SDK and server, system debugging related issues and potential solutions. Project Fugu introduction and technical practice

Fangzhen Song (ByteDance) introduced the background of Chromium Fugu project, its current status and the Web application examples using the Fugu API. Fangzhen also explained the development process of the Fugu API, introduced specific use cases, as well as the practices for WebXR-related technologies. WebGPU and AI

Yang Gu (Intel) introduced the standardization and implementations of WebGPU, related frameworks and applications, the Web AI architecture and related toolchains (such as TensorFlow.js WebGPU, ONNX Runtime, TVM, IREE, Transformers.js, etc.) Yang also talked about Intel "Web Graphics and Web AI" team's participation and contributions to W3C standards. Next generation of knowledge graph:semantic-enhanced and programmable graph

Lei Liang (Ant Group) analyzed and compared the two technological changes — general knowledge graphs and domain knowledge graphs — in the field of knowledge graphs. Lei introduced domain knowledge plug-ins based on knowledge graphs under LLM, limitations of knowledge management through RDF/OWL, and comparison of knowledge modeling in RDF and LPG. AI governance standards and practices

Qing An (Alibaba) introduced the background of AI industry and existing issues, and shared the working principles of Alibaba Technology Ethics Governance Committee, as well as the development status and future direction on AI governance standards in China and some standards bodies, e.g., ISO, EU, W3C, IEEE, etc.

Building large-scale Web front-end applications based on micro-modules

Zhengkai Zhong (Tencent) introduced the construction of large-scale Web front-end applications based on micro-modules, including what micro-modules are, the dilemma and solution of module federation, and the design and architecture of large-scale web front-end projects based on micro-modules. Introduction to OpenWallet and the new opportunities in a trustworthy Web

Wenjing Chu (Futurewei) introduced the mission, goals and organizational structure of the OpenWallet open source community, discussed the core role of digital wallets in trusted Web technologies and applications, potential collaborations regarding cutting-edge technologies on the Web, and how to participate in the work of the OpenWallet Foundation. WebNN API update

Min Zhang (Intel) shared the advantages of Web machine learning in client inference and the needs of developers. Min also introduced the WebNN technology architecture in W3C, its programming model, implementation in Chromium, integration with major JavaScript machine learning frameworks, integration with ONNX Runtime Web, relevant code examples and performance data, and their participation in W3C Working Groups and Community Groups. Real-time masking bullet chatting on the Web

Jun Liu(Bilibili)introduced the principle of masking bullet chatting and how to generate a mask and optimize performance on the Web, and then summarized the results after optimization. (See the slides and video on YouTube, Bilibili, WeChat)

Cloud-edge collaborative ubiquitous computing and use cases

Song Xu (China Mobile) introduced some use cases about Cloud-edge collaborative ubiquitous computing, including Uplink streaming, stream processing of complex tasks, distributed model of complex tasks, innovation of ubiquitous computing model and cross-layer research, Web3 decentralized identity and transactional data center, with the goal of encouraging more research on ubiquitous computing to better serve the Web community. DID powers the implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty in China

Jupeng Xia (Ant Group) started with sharing a movie-watching event, telling about blind people's pursuit of spiritual life and concern for personal privacy, which led to the discussion around the "Marrakesh Treaty", a human rights treaty in the field of copyright, which aims to provide equal opportunities for people with reading and/or visual disabilities, so as to guarantee them equal access to culture and education. Ant Group is establishing a new digital identity trust system through Distributed Identity (DID) to accelerate the implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty in China. Accessibility collaborative applications of sound sensing technology on mobile phones and smart IoT

Junbo Zhang (Xiaomi) introduced Xiaomi's sound sensing technology which can help cerebral palsy patients "speak", and make communication easier through an adaptive model. MiniApps standardization overview

Qing An (Alibaba) introduced the MiniApps ecosystem, the comparison between MiniApps and PWAs, W3C MiniApp standards architecture, the standardization testing work in the MiniApps Working Group and Community Group, and the related standardization process. (See the slides and video on YouTube)

W3C TAG review comments on MiniApps specifications

Fuqiao Xue (W3C) shared the comments from W3C Technical Architecture Group (TAG) on MiniApp specifications, including same-origin policy, end-to-end packet integrity verification, and performance issues of the packet format. Jia Wang (Baidu) explained how to make the MiniApp user agent compatible with implementing the same-origin policy on the Web, how developers use certificates to ensure the security of communication and the authenticity of packages, and how to render MiniApp pages as early as possible through the package-splitting mechanism and progressive loading. MiniApps — Optimize startup performance and improve user experience

Jing Feng (Finogeeks) introduced the architecture of MiniApps and explained the necessity of on-demand injection, how to design/implement on-demand injection of MiniApps, and compared the loading process and performance of on-demand injection. (See the slides and video on YouTube)

360 Navigation cube: From MiniApp to Web, enabling full potentials

Tong Sun (360) introduced the ecosystem and best practices of MiniApps and how to design and implement Miniapps-like cube on the Web, including the overall architecture, basic principles, specific technologies and development mode of cube, and also compared cube with W3C MiniApps. MiniApps: Perspective from overseas

Martin Alvarez-Espinar (Huawei) gave an overview about Web and the lightweight application ecosystem in Europe. Web and app distribution is more diverse in China than in Europe, and the interest in super apps is growing around the world. Martin also presented the Quick App Initiative of the open source organization OW2 and the W3C PWAs & MiniApps workshop and hackathon in Europe, as well as a vision for the future on MiniApp standards.
